Cathey's was founded by Friou Cathey, Sr. and his wife Myrtle in 1954 on Stone Avenue in Tucson, Arizona. In 1958 the business moved to Campbell Avenue. Originally, Cathey’s only sold vacuums and expanded to the sales and repair of sewing machines in the 1960s. As a family business, Friou Jr. and Donny worked with their parents running the store until Donny opened an additional store on Speedway Boulevard in 1978.
