The Congressional Award

The Congressional Award, established by the United States Congress in 1979, stands as a prestigious honor recognizing the initiative, service, and accomplishments of young Americans. Sponsored originally by Senator Malcolm Wallop and Congressman James Howard, the program operates through a unique public-private partnership, funded solely by private sector contributions under Public Law 96-114. Participants, eligible from age 13 1/2, engage in activities starting at 14 years old and must complete them by their 24th birthday to earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold Certificates and Medals. This inclusive initiative welcomes all young individuals, regardless of academic standing or physical ability, fostering personal development and community engagement across Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration domains.
